Grepit develops the use of Rust for Swedish car manufacture

Grepit, a leading company in embedded systems and product development, has since 2020 collaborated with a Swedish car manufacturer. Grepit’s technical expertise has been a contributing part in implementing the program language Rust into the car’s embedded systems.

Crucial factors for the project were safety and efficiency. Rust is a young programming language that rose to popularity due to its emphasis on security and performance. With attributes that align well with the car manufacturer’s vision, Rust became the obvious choice for the future development of the company.

Key players from Grepit have been Per Lindgren, employee at Grepit and Professor in Embedded Systems at Luleå University of Technology, and Johan Eriksson, Technical Manager at Grepit. Together they began exploring the potential of using Rust in embedded systems. Their research showed promising results and was presented at a conference in Berlin, where they crossed paths with the Swedish car manufacturer, who were seeking ways to use Rust in developing the embedded system in one of their car models.

The technical lead developer for the project was Julius Gustavsson, Chief Software Architect at the car manufacturer. He saw early on the benefits of using Rust and was the main reason the company adopted it. Grepit then provided essential expertise to turn the vision into a reality.

– We teamed up with Grepit to get us up and running, Julius says in a previous interview with Medium.

The collaboration between Grepit and the car manufacturer extends beyond code development. It involves active participation in Rust-related initiatives and communities. Grepit’s engagement with the Rust language aligns with the car manufacturer’s vision to expand the use of Rust to more systems, including key developments for automotive brands.

-The project has been successful, and we are proud to have been a contributing part in developing the manufacturer’s use of Rust. Our expertise has supported their project and strengthened our collaboration with them. We are ready to show our expertise to other departments within their company and other companies, Anna Costalonga says, Manager at Grepit North.
