Grepit develops the use of Rust for Swedish car manufacture

Grepit develops the use of Rust for Swedish car manufacture

Grepit, a leading company in embedded systems and product development, has since 2020 collaborated with a Swedish car manufacturer. Grepit’s technical expertise has been a contributing part in implementing the program language Rust into the car’s embedded systems.

Crucial factors for the project were safety and efficiency. Rust is a young programming language that rose to popularity due to its emphasis on security and performance. With attributes that align well with the car manufacturer’s vision, Rust became the obvious choice for the future development of the company.

Key players from Grepit have been Per Lindgren, employee at Grepit and Professor in Embedded Systems at Luleå University of Technology, and Johan Eriksson, Technical Manager at Grepit. Together they began exploring the potential of using Rust in embedded systems. Their research showed promising results and was presented at a conference in Berlin, where they crossed paths with the Swedish car manufacturer, who were seeking ways to use Rust in developing the embedded system in one of their car models.

The technical lead developer for the project was Julius Gustavsson, Chief Software Architect at the car manufacturer. He saw early on the benefits of using Rust and was the main reason the company adopted it. Grepit then provided essential expertise to turn the vision into a reality.

– We teamed up with Grepit to get us up and running, Julius says in a previous interview with Medium.

The collaboration between Grepit and the car manufacturer extends beyond code development. It involves active participation in Rust-related initiatives and communities. Grepit’s engagement with the Rust language aligns with the car manufacturer’s vision to expand the use of Rust to more systems, including key developments for automotive brands.

-The project has been successful, and we are proud to have been a contributing part in developing the manufacturer’s use of Rust. Our expertise has supported their project and strengthened our collaboration with them. We are ready to show our expertise to other departments within their company and other companies, Anna Costalonga says, Manager at Grepit North.

Grepit develops remote-controlled vehicles for the Swedish Defense Material Administration (FMV)

Grepit develops remote-controlled vehicles for the Swedish Defense Material Administration (FMV)

Grepit, a leader in technology development, was commissioned by the Vidsel Test Range (VTR)—a test site under the Swedish Defense Materiel Administration (FMV)—to enhance a key component of their moving ground targets used during weapons testing. The result was that the entire component was optimized, and the manufacturing process was made more efficient.

The Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) is a remotely operated driverless vehicle designed to simulate dynamic ground targets during military exercises and weapons tests. Operated through a specialized control box, the UGV can be safely maneuverer from a distance, ensuring precision and safety in test environments.

Grepit’s contribution
As the control box is part of a larger operational system, FMV’s wish was to streamline the manufacturing process. With the help of Grepit, the control system has been optimized and packaged, which has resulted in improvements both on the inside and outside to facilitate the manufacturing and usage of the box.

David Eriksson, Electrical Engineer at Grepit, highlighted the improvements:
– By moving all parts to an in-house manufactured embedded system, we simplify manufacturing and make it possible to easily modify the control box.

Hanna Kristensson, Manager at Grepit West, is also pleased with the result:
– We have delivered what was requested and more. We are happy about this collaboration and that we get the opportunity to be a key player in technical solutions. I look forward to future collaborations with FMV where we can continue to be a supplier of high-quality, technical products.

Grepit and Luleå Formula Student collaborate to develop electric Formula Car

Grepit and Luleå Formula Student collaborate to develop electric Formula Car

Grepit, a leading player in technology development, has been an invaluable partner in this project. Their support has been crucial in enabling the students at Luleå University of Technology (LTU) to realize their ideas and dreams of competing with an electric formula car.

-We are incredibly grateful for Grepit’s support and expertise. Their contribution has played a major role in our project, and it is with their help that we have been able to come this far, Max Wiberg says, chairman of Luleå Formula Student and student in the Master of Science in Engineering Architecture program at LTU.

Grepit’s Contribution
The formula car was originally built by Jimmy Abrahamsson and Johan Eriksson, the co-owners of Grepit AB. They handed over the car to the Formula Student team at Luleå University of Technology to give the students the opportunity to build on the project.

-We are happy to support young engineers and contribute to the development of sustainable technology through this formula car project. It is fantastic to see their dedication and hard work, Johan Eriksson says, co-owner and technical manager at Grepit AB.

From Vision to Reality
With the car in their hands, the Formula Student team began working towards their vision of converting the traditional combustion engine formula car into an electric formula car. Students from various programs, such as mechanical engineering, technical design, and automotive systems engineering, have collaborated to achieve this goal. The work has included both leisure projects and courses in mechanical engineering, vehicle dynamics, and design.

First Event: Ljungbyhed Motorbana
Now, the Formula Students are ready to participate in their first race event at Ljungbyhed motor track in southern Sweden, where they will observe and learn from eight other teams from Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. The car project has been ongoing for several years, starting as a leisure project and now being part of a course. The main sponsor is Grepit, which provides the car and supports the team with technical issues and other challenges.
